Where did the 2xy come from to start the equation?

Thad, that's simply a result of squaring (x + y)
(x + y)^2 = (x + y)(x + y) = x^2 + y^2 + xy + xy = x^2 + y^2 + 2xy
(x + y)^2 = (x + y)(x + y) = x^2 + y^2 + xy + xy = x^2 + y^2 + 2xy

I really hope there is an update soon that fixes a lot of these formatting issues. It's really hard to read the problems right now and causing a lot of wasted time.
