In paragraph one it states that presence for a man is related to size, " promise large or small." Was this metaphoric? I am not sure how gestures, voices and opinions are appearance. How do you get appearance from lines 21-24?

Matt, according to the passage, the traditional view ("usage and conventions") holds that a man's presence is embodied in the PROMISE of what he can do to others, whether it's physical, sexual, and other things that are not physical, regardless of his actual size or appearance. Whereas for women, it is more -- using some of the words in the passage -- much more "internalized", "intrinsic". Her physical appearance and behaviors directly correlate to what people think of her.
