This does not make sense. The idea of the paragraph is that placebos should be less expensive, but people won't use them if they think the medicine is cheap. How does that equate to you get what you pay for? In addition, I scoured the paragraph and did not see "even though" anywhere. Please explain.

Matthew, you are right that the paragraph only has "though", not "even though". Still, that's what the explanation author meant.
As you said, the main idea is "placebos should be less expensive, but people won't use them if they think the medicine is cheap". Turned into a generalization, the idea becomes "people will only use things that they have spent a lot of money for".
