I though you could only subtract

Start with 3x + 9 = 15; divide both sides by 3, and you get: x + 3 = 5.
Subtract 1 from both sides, and you get:
x + 2 = 4.
Subtract 1 from both sides, and you get:
x + 2 = 4.
