How come k= 1/4 ?

Hi Saeed,
A fraction like 1/2 would have worked just as well for answer-choices (A), (B), and (C). But for choice (D), it's hard to determine the value of the square root of 1/2. So, we needed a perfect square, and chose the smallest perfect square available, 1/4.
