I can't see why Ansel Adams is too far from the phrase. At least, it's closer to the phrase than photographic career is.

Nisha Yao, I agree that these trying do decide between some of the choices sometimes can be like splitting hair. Like you, I saw little wrong with choice B. However, I can offer my opinion to why E is a slightly better construct. The main idea is that Ansel Adams began his photographic career as he was traveling in the Southwest. So, timing is the question. Hence, having "In 1945" to begin the sentence - as in E - makes the sentence better than the one in B.

I apologize but that's the best explanation I have.
