Freedom cannot be achieved. It is a goal. Since the beginning of mankind, people have tried to reach this goal. However, the truth is, we are always going to be bound by the rules of society. Although people are able to feel free by doing what they choose, everything, from playing sports to sitting on your couch watching television, has rules and takes away from your freedom.
Even as a student, I feel that I am free. However, the more I think about it, the more I realize that I am far from free. I have to work hard at school and although it helps me to learn and become successful in the future, it may not be what I like and thus, is not freedom. In the same way, although schools give us freedom of our actions, they have complete control over our minds. Because they decide what we learn, they are able to manipulate our thoughts – not in a bad way, but in a way that is “right”. Therefore, in a sense, schooling imprisons a person’s mind and spirit.
Some may think that one they are done with school, they will be free. Once school is out of the way, they can hang out with friends, have parties, and do just what they want to do.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. These people have forgotten that nothing in life is free. Although they can be free if they choose, the fact that they need to earn money to support themselves keeps them bound up by the rules of society. As a result, one cannot be truly free. Although they may be happier this way, people need to work and follow the rules to stay safe and survive.
After reviewing these thoughts and opening your mind to all possibilities, would you not agree with me? Freedom truly is impossible to achieve. In a world ruled by money, success, and hard work, people must trade a portion of their freedom in order to fit into society and thrive.
