In a legislative body of 200 people, the number of Democrats is 50 less than 4 times the number of Republicans. If one fifth of the legislators are neither Republican nor Democrat, how many of the legislators are Republicans?
(A) 42

Assume the number of Democrats is represented by D, and Republicans by R. The neither/nor (independents) are represented by I. Here is how you set it up.

D + R + I = 200
I = ¹⁄₅ of 200 = 40
D + R + 40 = 200
so D + R = 160

and we know D = 4R - 50

Hence we have 2 unknowns with 2 equations, which will be easy to solve.

I am going to solve this, and repeat the setup from a previous post.

Assume the number of Democrats is represented by D, and Republicans by R. The neither/nor (independents) are represented by I. Here is how to set it up.

D + R + I = 200
I = ¹⁄₅ of 200 = 40
D + R + 40 = 200
so D + R = 160

and we know D = 4R - 50

We have 2 unknowns with 2 equations. Let's solve:

D + R = 160, so D = 160 - R
Substituting into D = 4R - 50, we have
160 - R = 4R - 50
210 = 5R
R = 42

"50 less than 4 time the number of x" is reffering

4x-50?

Vocabulary is much annoying than the mathmatical formula to me...

Hi Yoshinori,

This is one of the quirks of English grammar.

"Less than" reverses the left-to-right order, so "x less than y" means y - x.

To use the left-to-right order, we could say "x minus y," which means x - y.

"x subtract y" also uses the left-to-right order, x - y.

But "x subtracted from y" reverses the left-to-right order: y - x.

Nakashari, looks like a verbal test more,than a math test, the terminology that GRE using in their test are so confusing to the tester!!

Sudad, English is not an easy language to master. If one wants to study at the graduate level though, s/he has to master scientific English, including Math English!
