I chose CD for this question, and don't find the answer or the explanation very compelling. The author of the passage may have intended CF, but without further context, I don't see one answer as better than the other.
It was said that a character might overcome evil Impulses - impulse is an extension of intensity moreso than of sophistication, I would argue. Being evil, or "bad", does not require sophistication, merely an rage, or "intensity" that could motivate one to cruel acts.
Given answer CD, the author contrasts (1), an admirable character in possession of vitality and gusto, who channels his aggressive feelings into something that benefits humanity. He would contrast this with (2), a less admirable character who is too lazy and unmotivated to work towards either good or bad ends, and simply wastes his life away.
How is CD not an equally plausible answer?

The first choice for the 1st blank: ire, means "anger". Evil is the best fit because it is the opposite for good.
