I see no where in the passage that Hemingway states without background " you have nothing." where did you find that? I did notice the talk of groundwork. D seemed better because he spends a lot of time talking about the importance of a background. It seemed like his number one area of emphasis.

It's possible the answers have changed. A is correct, geography illuminated other events. I don't see anything about having nothing that you mention.
