What is "objective case"? Why is it me and not I? Thanks.

Charlene, objective case simply means that it should be in the form of an object, such as: me, him, her, them, etc. In this sentence, the beginning phrase is "The president asked the secretary of defense and I" .... which is in the subject-verb-object form. The "secretary of defense and I" is the object, so "I" is not the correct form, "me" is the right one.
