Andres Tirado, square brackets are just another way of representing parentheses. That means in an equation, you perform the operations within the inner parentheses first, then you go out to the other brackets or parentheses.

Alex Chin, thank you for posting your steps. It looks like there is a mistake you made. Inside the brackets:
8 - 2 (-5)
= 8 - (-10)
= 8 + 10
= 18.
