Choice (D) commits a fallacy of burdening a sentence with one word being used twice making such a sentence sound awkward ("began" and "beginning"). If a synonym were used, than everything would feel natural.

Ben, I agree with you that choice D, though grammatically the correct answer, would feel more natural if it uses a synonym of "beginning".
