Wouldn't A normally be read as 1/2x; that is if x = 1/2, 1/2 times 1/2 would equal 1/4?

Asa, the culprit is the notation. The problem meant 1/(2x), not ½ x. Our apology for the confusion.

I used to think in the same as you does, it is very tricky. In this case actually you can consider 2x as the dominator, the logic behind that was 1/(2*x)=1/2*1/x hope that can answer your question; )
