How does this work, why does the integer change to 2

Enea, we are only rewriting 4 as 2 raised to the power of 2. Then the powers 2 and x are multiplied (you do that when an exponent is raised again to another power). Hope this helps.

Nathalie, I am not quite sure what you are with the 2 in front of the x being squared. Have you tried to follow the step by step explanation?

(4x)^2 = 4^2x, since (x^a)^b = x^ab.
Then we have (2^2)^2x, since 4 is 2^2. Finally, the it's 2^4x, since (x^a)^b = x^ab.
