First, 0 is considered a positive integer too so this would make side B is not indicated that x and y are nonzero. Second question, what is x and y were positive fractions e.g. taking both at 1/16? Would this make side B greater too?

Hi John,

Zero is neither positive nor negative. It is the number that divides the number line into positive and negative numbers: all numbers to the right of 0 are positive and all numbers to the left are negative.

If x = 1/16, then (sq. root 1/16) + (q. root 1/16) = 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2.

And sq. root (1/16 + 1/16) = sq. root (2/16) = sq. root (1/8) = (1/2)(1/sq. root 2), which is smaller than 1/2. (see attached file for this solution with mathematical formatting)
