I follow it up to where the brackets around the "(x^2 -2x)" are taken out, why does the "2x" go from negative to positive when the brackets are eliminated?

Miranda, "2x" goes from negative to positive, because of the negative sign in front of the bracket. Think of the negative sign in front of any bracket as -1. -1 multiplies into -x^2 and -2x, resulting in -x^2 + 2x.
